It was a gorgeous warm day on Thursday, so the girls and I decided to get out of the house and spend the day stream dipping.
We stopped on the way to pick up a couple of fishing nets, then drove a few more minutes to one of the gorgeous National Trust properties we’re lucky to have nearby.
WELLIE WADING
We’d been sent a pair of Muck Boots that Lil Sis was desperate to try out, so – after checking water wasn’t too deep – I gave her the OK to do a spot of wellie wading.
They were already a winner in her eyes, because they had hot pink on them (quickest way to her heart – ply her with pink) but she was also impressed by the fact they kept her feet nice and dry (although she did go on to splash about in bare feet anyway *eye roll*).
She also loved that the neoprene material was softer and more flexible than her old rubber wellies (which, incidentally, we call gumboots in New Zealand), that used to hurt her feet if she wore them for long lengths of time.
Lil Sis is starting a new primary school in September (looooong story – I’ll explain it all one day!), and one of the many things I love is how it puts a lot of emphasis on outdoor activities. So much so, wellies are actually on the uniform list, so at least I have that part sorted now!
HUNTING FOR MINIBEASTS
We followed the stream as it wound its way through the grassy fields, stopping to scoop up clumps of stream algae and examine it for minibeasts.
I spent half my childhood running wild in the New Zealand bush, crafting dens out of sticks and damming up the streams, so I loved seeing the girls having fun and getting mucky.
We actually bought rubber ducks with us too, and had planned to race them down stream, but were having so much fun stream dipping we totally forgot about them until it was time to leave. Afterwards, we wandered up to the National Trust property for a fruit juice and a slice of cake before heading home, tired, muddy and happy!
