WHAT NOT TO SAY WHEN PACKING FOR A MINI BREAK

ME, PREPARING FOR A FAMILY WEEKEND AWAY:

Makes a list of every possible piece of clothing needed for one adult, and two children.

Realises something vital is in the washing basket – throws on last minute load of washing.

Pulls suitcase from top of wardrobe.

Begins to assemble three piles of clothes.

Makes sure the kids have done homework. Attempts to get emails and outstanding work sorted.

Throws washing in dryer.

Turns on dishwasher.

Makes sure the iPad is charging.

Crawls into bed at 1am.

Alarm goes off at 6.30am.

Makes coffee.

Unloads dishwasher.

Gets kids’ breakfast.

Unloads dryer, picks out essential weekend items.

Starts to pack clothes into suitcase. Realises suitcase is too small. Goes upstairs to get bigger one.

Digs through clean washing to find socks.

Wakes kids up (takes two minutes for a cuddle).

Oversees breakfast, brushing hair and teeth.

Lays out outfits.

Checks they have coats for every possible metereological event.

Double-checks they have two of each shoe.

Packs charged iPad.

Tips out cold, unfinished coffee.

Loads dishwasher.

Shouts at kids to ‘Get dressed NOW!’.

Empties fridge. Tips old milk, puts in recycling bin.

Runs upstairs for 30-second shower.

Pulls on clothes.

Breaks up argument between girls about whether Tom – of Tom and Jerry fame – is short for Thomas (?).

Runs out of time to do makeup – grabs bag to finish in car.

Checks doors are locked and windows are closed.

Turns lights off and heating off.

Passes bags to OH to load in car.

Grabs water and snacks for car journey.

Takes out rubbish on way out.

Locks door, collapses in car.

THE OTHER HALF, PREPARING FOR A FAMILY WEEKEND AWAY:

Wakes at 7.45, works out for 30 minutes.

Lies on bed for 15 minutes to ‘recover’.

Leisurely wanders downstairs, makes bowl of cereal.

Throws clothing and a toothbrush into a bag.

Carries bags to car.

Sits in car.

Beeps horn.

Makes comment about how long it took me to get ready.

Collapses from elbow in face (OK, that last one only happened in my mind).

Any of this sound familiar (please reassure me I’m not the only one)?

So funny and so try that a lot of men don’t realise how much mums do x

  2. I like to think I’m an exception to the general male population 😉 And I know how much my Mum does before her and my Dad go away – he has no idea!

    • Haha! We’ll let you off in this instance – the fact you’ve noticed your mum’s workload gets you some brownie points too. 😉

  3. I also tend to wake up earlier and sleep less before travelling, but that’s because I love taking my time in the morning 😀

    • I hate rushing, yet can never quite get organised enough to avoid aforementioned rush… I blame the fact there are not enough hours in the day. #MyExcuseAndImStickingToIt 😉

  4. Oh yes totally – in our house this applies to my teen son. It is the wonderful male species for you! Kaz x

  5. Hahahaha love this! So true! Women do all the bloody organising don’t we?! They just swan downstairs dressed with the car keys then moan when they arrive that ‘we’ have forgotten to pack something! Fab post 🙂 Tor xx

    • Grrr! That’s the worst!! ‘Why didn’t you bring my (fill in the blank)?’ GET IT YOURSELF!!!! 😉

Yes! This is SO true. I remember my mum being the same and my step dad just -as he put it- ‘Going with the flow’ (Or more like just beeping the horn lol) Great post!! xx

    • Going with the flow… good one! More like: avoiding all the work, am I right?? 😉

Haha this is so totally true! The same could be said for getting my child up in the morning for school too lol

    • Yes! But at least they have the excuse of being a child who doesn’t know better so it’s very slightly less annoying. But still annoying all the same. 😉

Lol I do love this post however I’ve got a good one, whilst I do all of the clothes, tech etc, he gets the kids up, fed, washed and dressed, loads the car and makes a picnic for the journey. You need to give D some lessons 😉 xx

  9. Hahaha… everytime! The sitting in the car waiting is the worst! My husband also calls an uber for a night out the second the babysitter arrives and gets all grumpy that I’m still giving her instructions when it arrives 1min later! #brillblogposts

    • Arrgh! Another pet hate – and you just know they’re sitting in the taxi apologising to the driver for how long you’re taking… *eye roll* 😉

  10. Ha I can imagine this is so true and for so many people too!

Lol don’t worry I think this happens to the best of us, I don’t think you are alone. Still though what manic mayhem it can be.
