NASAL UPDATE: Today I found a pea up the other nostril. What strange delight will I find wedged up her nose tomorrow? Any guesses??
Nosey Little Monkey
Ah-ah-ah-CHOOOOO!
My (nearly) two-year-old daughter came down with the sniffles the other day. Nothing strange about that, you might think, and I didn’t either – except maybe it was a silly time of year to get a cold, while we’re enjoying the hottest summer in years.
I wondered if it might be an allergy instead, as she didn’t seem to be ill, yet was sneezing like a machine gun (complete with some impressive snot trails, which I then had to pin her down to remove – why do kids hate having their faces wiped so much???)
I noticed that the right nostril seemed more – now how do I put this without revolting my less mucous-immune readers – free-flowing than the other. Anyway, after sneezing all night she woke this morning, and promptly started all over again.
After a particularly violent episode, I stepped over to clean up the carnage, and found something. There, sitting on her cheek, entwined in the sticky aftermath, was a clear, plastic ring – like the kind you find in the packaging of a kids’ toy. Clearly it had been pushed aforementioned nostril around the exact time the sneezing and non-stop nose running had begun.
I suppose I should be thankful that the first foreign object she chose to shove up her nose had a hole in the middle, so didn’t obstruct her breathing, and also that it conveniently removed itself. I know most Mums have at least one war story of rushing to Casualty to have a bean/marble/crayon removed from their child’s nasal orifice.
And what about those adults who suffer years of sinus complaints, only to discover that a Barbie shoe has been wedged up their nose for the past 30 years?
I hope that will put an end to her ongoing scientific experiments to find out what, besides her finger, can fit up her nose (but I’m not naive enough to truly believe it will!). I’ll just have to keep an eye out for any more suspicious runny noses and sneezing fits, and keep the Barbie shoes well out of reach.
Have your little ones had any similar experiences???

The human body is cool though isn’t it!

not happened to my little one yet! I’m sure its all to come. She did have an obsession at one point of putting her finger up my nose but thankfully that’s passed!
When I was 5 a friend told me to smell her strawberry rubber. Unfortunately it was a very small piece and it went straight up and got stuck in my nostril. Mum was called to school & took me to the hospital! I’m sure Piran will do something similar!
Marketing to Milk: I do find it quite amazing how it was trying to get rid of the alien object for two straight days beforehand!!
Rock n Roll Mummy: My daughter thought that was absolutely hilarious as well, jamming her finger up my nose. Luckily there’s very little brain for her to reach…
Kelly: Not to laugh at your misfortune, but I found that really funny – just the image of you giving a good old sniff, and the rubber shooting up into your nose! It’s like something that would happen in a cartoon…
My daughter went through a phase of putting things up her nose when she was about 5 and I got a call to go collect her from school one day because she was ‘quite distressed’ and she had in fact lodged an olive up her nose!!
I know I shouldn’t laugh, but what possesses them to insert foodstuffs up their nose?? An olive ain’t small either, so she must really have wedged it up there!!! x
Good gosh! Amazing what they can fit up there!
Thankfully the boys have yet to shove anything anywhere they shouldnt, but I did say yet…………
LauraCYMFT: Isn’t it just? I dread to think what’ll be up there tomorrow…
TheMadHouse: You realise you’ve just jinxed yourself!!! Better check those nostrils, pronto!!
