Complete and Utter Nonsense…

Well, I’ve done it. I’ve officially become one of those aggravating Mums who add ‘ies’ to the end of every word – drinkies, kissies, foodies. But I don’t stop there – I’ve developed an entire ridiculous vocabulary that not only makes absolutely no grammatical sense, it’s downright embarrassing. Bed time has become ‘Nappy-noo-noos’, my daughter is referred to as ‘Bubbla Wubbla’, and her sneakers are ‘shoesie-woosies’. I know, I know – you’re not supposed to dumb down your language for your little one, but I just open my mouth, and these nonsensical words pour out. And that’s not all – these days, when I get a song stuck in my head, it’s the theme tune from In The Night Garden. The other day I found myself walking around the house speaking in the strange baby voice of one of the Waybuloo characters (Yo Jo Jo, I think, or was it Lau Lau?) Sometimes it’s hard to remember I’m a professional features journalist, with 18 years in the biz. Anyway, I must sign off now – it’s Nappy-noo-noos time for Mummy-wummy.

SO True!! My friend and I recently realised that we had been doing this a little too much when our children (now 2) were talking, using the words we had created. My friend’s daughter genuinely thinks a zip is a “zippity zip zip” and my FP still does “poopy poos”! Oh dear!

  2. Ha, I do this too and mine can’t even talk yet (4 month old twins)! The worst thing is that my names for things are so unimaginative – their bug-shaped toy is called ‘Buggy Bug’, their rattle that looks like a bee is ‘Buzzy Bee’. You’d think I could be more creative than that!
