WATCH YOUR BACK, HALLMARK (handmade mother’s day cards)

Mother’s Day is always a bit of a funny one for me, as my Mum is back in New Zealand, and they celebrate on a completely different day. 


I’m a bit hopeless with dates at the best of times. Without all the telly adverts to prompt me, it’s pretty much impossible for me to remember the Kiwi version, so I just take the lazy way out, and force my Mum to celebrate UK Mother’s Day instead. Sorry Mum. 


Anyway, enough about my Swiss cheese memory. 


I’m all for heartfelt messages, but I’m not a huge fan of store-bought cards that you feel obligated to buy on certain dates, like Valentine’s, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc… 


Last Summer Big Sis and I pressed some flowers that we’d discovered growing in our front garden, so I had a bit of a brainwave. I bought some coloured card (actually a set of dividers, as the supermarket didn’t have sheets of cardboard) and some of that sticky plastic stuff you cover your school books with. 


Then Big Sis and I made these:

we glued the pressed flowers to the card

experimented with a bit of bejazzling

stuck the mounted flowers on to a piece of folded A4 card

big sis added a little bit of art to the front

then we covered them in plastic book wrap to protect the flowers

et Voila! Homemade Mother’s Day cards – one from me, one from the grandkids. 


Beat that, Hallmark!!
