AN APOLOGY

Having two kids is pretty cool for lots of reasons.

We feel like a proper family now – rather than a couple with a kid, making it up as we go along. I don’t have to endure another pregnancy (woo-hoo!) and I finally get to re-use all the clothes I meticulously stored away after Big Sis grew out of them.

And watching my kids playing together, giggling hysterically, is just divine.

But it’s also brought an unexpected revelation. A full and deep understanding of the plight of the younger sibling.

See, I’m an eldest child. As such, I spent nearly half of my life believing that my younger sister was put on the earth purely to be a pain in my backside.

She was always touching my stuff, and getting in my way, and generally being annoying. Plus, Mum always seemed to take her side, which just pissed me off even more.

But now I can see that life as the baby of the family is not as cushy as it seems – because Lil Sis puts up a lot of shit from Big Sis. A LOT.

There are the gentle cuddles that turn into rib-crushing squeezes. The violent snatching of any toy that Big Sis deems to be ‘MINE!’ The sneaky shoves that knock Lil Sis flying (I don’t think Big Sis is being malicious – it’s like she just thinks to herself: I wonder what would happen if I did… THIS! Shove. Splat. Scream).

And then I find myself snatching Lil Sis up in my arms, and ordering Big Sis to the Naughty Step.

Penny-drop moment. Mum wasn’t really playing favourites – she was simply rescuing my sister from whatever torture I was subjecting her to. And, looking back, there was a lot.

So I’d like to take this chance to offer my sister a public apology for all the indignities she endured as my younger sibling. Here we go…

• Sorry for telling you that you were adopted

• Sorry for making you eat cat biscuits, and telling you they were Scooby snacks

• Sorry for trying to hypnotise you with subliminal messages while you slept

• Sorry for refusing to let you talk to me at school

• Sorry for squashing your windpipe so you’d talk in a funny voice

• Sorry for convincing you I could predict the weather

(in my defense, I didn’t think you’d actually believe such an outlandish claim!)

No hard feelings, huh Sis?

Ha ha. Excellent. On the way home from school my older and her friend used to make me walk behind them always. They would tell me that there was no room for “three-abreast”. I had not idea what this meant.

She is my best friend now.

Hilarious, love the one about the windpipe! I wrote a similar post to this, apologising to me sister for being so awful. I was the eldest by four years and I made her life hell for as least 14 years! We are best friends now though. I am hoping to have another one when Iyla is about two to stop the sibling rivarly being too awful (hipefully!) x

I still think in my case my mother favoured my younger sister. She is 23 and she still pays for her! Boooo! and the windpipe thing, we have all done it. Oops

I’m the youngest sister so I absolutely feel for yours – especially as I got (and believed!) the whole bit about being adopted. And not being cool enough to talk to at school (that was my older bro). We go through a lot, so I’ll accept your apology as if it were from my own siblings 😉

  10. lol i love this post. I don’t have any siblings but I’m sure if I did I’d be doing the same post. x
