I’m not a huge drinker these days, mainly because I’m so sleep deprived these days it just makes me tired (the younger me would be horrified by this person I’ve become), but the festive season just wouldn’t be as, well, festive without a tipple or two, right?
OH and I have a little bit of a routine going now – we stock up on couple of bottles of our favourite wines (white for me, red for him) and splash out on a bottle of liquor: a couple of years ago it was a fancy bottle of whiskey, last year it was Crystal Head vodka.
We usually spend Christmas at OH’s Grandad’s farmhouse in rural Devon, so once the girls are in bed we pour ourselves a glass over loads of ice. Then we sit in front of the roaring open fire, while the wind whistles wildly outside. Perfect.
We both have jobs that get busier in December, so it’s always a bit of a panic to get everything sorted before we drive down. I decided to give it a mid-week tweak by making Twisted Hot Chocolate: I heated almond milk, and added two tablespoons of Green & Black organic hot chocolate powder. I added a slug of the spiced vodka, and topped it with whipped cream and a sprinkle of crushed Flake.
A deliciously decadent winter treat; after all, they don’t call it Christmas ‘spirit’ for nothing…
