To me, Mother’s Day isn’t about extravagant gifts, it’s about the small, heartfelt gestures.
OH had to work today, but treated me and the girls to a lovely lunch yesterday. This morning I was lucky enough to get a beautiful bunch of flowers (paid for by the girls using their pocket money) and a gorgeous handmade card. Perfect!
When Portmeirion invited me to take part in their #ThanksMum campaign by preparing a special Mother’s Day treat, I knew straight away I wanted to create a magical afternoon tea party, using their BOTANIC GARDEN range.
I’m not lucky enough to have my own mum nearby (she still lives in New Zealand, with the rest of my family), but this is exactly what I would do if she wasn’t half a world away: as well as being quintessentially British, afternoon tea is the perfect way to take a break from the whirlwind of life, and just be.
These gorgeous Portmeirion floral and fauna designs remind me of the intricate tableware used by well-to-do Victorians, and I love how you can choose from a wide variety of individual designs to create your own delightfully mismatched table set.

I wish I could say I made the sponge myself, but my baking skills are decidedly lacking, so I bought this one and gave it an added dollop of buttercream icing for extra decadence. I covered it with blueberries and edible rose petals, and showed it off on the 10-inch Portmeirion cake stand – perfect for your afternoon tea goodies.
The girls had their eyes firmly on these butterfly cakes, whereas I opted for traditional scones (with clotted cream and raspberry jam, of course), all artfully displayed on the pretty vintage-style two-tier cake stand.

I served up our lovely sweet treats on the Botanic Garden side plates, with the matching Portmeirion cake forks (how cute are they?!).
And, of course, no afternoon tea is complete without a pot of freshly brewed English Breakfast tea, served in a delicate china cup and saucer (it just doesn’t taste as good from a mug, don’t you agree?).

Thanks to Portmeirion for making my Mother’s Day afternoon tea extra special. Whatever you’re doing today, I hope you’re being spoiled rotten!

Aw that sounds lovely, my Mother’s Day started off well with lovely cards, hugs, kisses and presents in bed then it all went wrong with hurtful family arguments. I feel flat and teary tonight.

We both take milk and our teas of choice are English Breakfast, Assam and Earl Grey. We have a large choice of green and herbal teas too, good for a quick pick-me-up .

I am absolutely addicted to tea ! I tend to take it with milk no sugar and occasionally with sweetners.
Id love to do a real tea-tasting and discover the subtleties between e.g. Lapsang Suchong and Darjeeling. With all the herbal and green teas fashionable now, the old fashioned varieties have been forgotten. You know I don’t live in the UK but I would love to win this for my sister in London who is the only person in our family who doesn’t drink coffee – she’s a tea-only girl.

I must admit that I do sometimes treat myself to a nice sit down with a cup of tea and it does taste better from a china cup. It also taste fantastic when accompanied by a nice cake or a scone. Or with a nice cheese scone fresh from the oven but that involves me making rather a lot of mess in the kitchen and doing rather a lot of clearing up before my cup of tea!

Gently agitate until tea bag is fully submerged, leave to brew for four minutes. I set the over timer. Remove teabag and add semi skimmed milk until a well baked colour emerges. Voila!
