I was a complete bookworm as a kid. Given the choice of playing outside with my friends, or staying curled up with a copy of The Magic Faraway Tree, Enid Blyton would win every time.
I might have been sitting in my bedroom in New Zealand, but I travelled the world through the pages of a thousand novels – from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to The Famous Five, to Sweet Valley High.
As much as I love my tech (including this KOBO e-reader) traditional books will always have a warm, fuzzy place in my heart. As a child most of the books I read were those that had belonged to my father when he was a child. This meant I read lots of boys’ adventure stories by writers such as John Buchan, Rider Haggard and so on. My favourite book that was actually given to me as a present was The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge, I loved its combination of historical setting, beautifully described houses & landcapes, wonderful characters and a hint of magic. It also made a nice change from all the stories of swashbuckling and derring-do that were my usual fare, especially because the main character was female.

Elmer the elephant by David Mckee is definitely one of my favorite childhood books, I love the message behind it that it is alright for everyone to be different and that we all possess unique qualities.
