Ever since the girls were born I’ve been a lot more conscious of the cleaning products we use in the house.
Big Sis suffered terribly from eczema when she was a baby (read more about that HERE), so we were forced to examine every single thing she came into contact with – from soap and shampoo, to washing powder and the cleaning products we used.
It opened my eyes to harshness of many ingredients we’re routinely exposed to – some of which are freely used in the child and baby market (FYI: if you spot ‘sodium laureth sulfate’ on the back of your baby shampoo or body wash, avoid!).
Seeing the awful physical effect it had on Big Sis (at one point her upper chest was covered in raw, itchy patches) prompted me to move towards more natural, eco-friendly cleaning products, ones that still provide powerful cleaning but without the harsh chemicals.
So I was interested to hear about a company called SEVENTH GENERATION.
Established in the US 25 years ago they have created a plant-based range of products proven to be gentle on the most delicate skin, including everything from laundry detergent, to disinfectants, to baby wipes and nappies, and now you can buy them here, at TESCO.
You won’t find any dyes, synthetic fragrances (all products have the option of 100% fragrance free) or artificial brighteners, or any other ingredients known to cause irritation (all the ingredients are clearly labelled on the back so you can see exactly what you’re getting).
I’ve been using their eco-friendly cleaning products for a few weeks now, and one of the things I’ve really noticed is the lack of that chemical smell most household cleaners leave behind. This is especially relevant in the kitchen, where the girls’ food comes into direct contact with the worktop surfaces, as I’ve always been wary of toxins transferring to their plates (did you know chemical exposure is being increasingly linked to chronic childhood illnesses, including asthma and allergies?).
I was also impressed by the company’s commitment to sustainability; most of their laundry bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic; larger bottles require 20% virgin plastic for added strength, but they have replaced the petroleum-based with plastic made from sugar cane. How great is that?
But don’t take my word for it – here’s your chance to try the Seventh Generation range of eco-friendly cleaning products for yourself! I’m giving away a hamper, worth £35, containing all the goodies you can see in the photo:
• 1 x bottle of dish liquid
• 1 x glass and surface spray
• 1 x laundry detergent
• 1 x all-purpose cleaner
• 1 x concentrated laundry detergent
• 1 x toilet bowl cleaner
