PICNIC PERFECTION // our ‘no junk’ challenge

I’m from New Zealand, so picnic is my middle name. Not actually – that would be weird – but let’s just say I’m pretty well versed in the art of the outdoor spread.

Except times have changed. When I was knee-high to a picnic basket our fare likely consisted of salt & vinegar crisps, sausage rolls, soggy sandwiches, cheese triangles and some doughnuts for dessert.

These days we’re more savvy about nutrition, and I like to make sure the girls are getting their alfresco vitamins. So when Organix invited us to continue our NO JUNK CHALLENGE with a deliciously wholesome picnic, we started planning our hamper.

But first – to the kitchen! We picked up some chicken wings, marinated them in soy sauce and honey. While they were baking in the oven we boiled up some wild rice, and popped some plain popcorn. Rounding off our pickie spread were some malted bread rolls, fresh apricots, some carrot sticks, and a little cheeky antipasto for Mummy (olives and artichokes – YUM!).

The weather was so gorgeous we ended up sitting out in the back garden (slathered in SPF 25+ sunscreen, of course) and enjoyed a lovely family day, followed by a splash in the paddling pool.

A great day, and a yummy spread, and not a single crisp in sight!

  1. That picnic looks amazing and your girls are just too gorgeous (like their Mama)-we love a picnic (and often have them indoors too-a carpet picnic when the weather doesn’t behave)-love that you’ve eradicated crisps and made yours super healthy-healthy food equals happy kids. Love this post!
