
Freesias grow all over New Zealand, popping up in thick clusters of creamy blooms each spring and giving off the most amazing perfume.
They used to grow in flowerbeds on the airbase where I grew up. You weren’t supposed to pick them, but my sister and I knew they were Mum’s favourite flowers, so we’d sneak a few stems on our way home and proudly present them to her.
She’d make a point of telling us we shouldn’t really have picked them – because they were there for everyone to enjoy – but you could see she was secretly pleased. They’d fill the house with their heavenly fragrance, and to this day it’s one of my absolute favourite scents; the smell instantly lifts me up and fills my mind with thoughts of my mum.
So now I want to know – what are YOUR favourite scents?
