So after four hours, and a lot of screaming and crying, the lovely doctors at Chelsea & Westminster hospital had managed to remove the button that had been firmly wedged up Big Sis’s left nostril.
Now, I just wanted to get home and give her lots of cuddles.
I spotted a bus approaching that went right up our local high street. Finally, a bit of luck!
As soon as I hoisted the stroller up on to the bus I wished I hadn’t. We were now approaching rush hour, and it was jam packed. I could see the little alcove for prams was free, but I couldn’t get down the aisle.
Slowly the people began to filter down to the back, until there was just one man left in the way. He was facing the opposite direction, so I tapped him once, lightly, on the arm. ‘Excuse me please,’ I said.
I expected him to turn, see the pushchair, and step out of the way. Instead he swung around, and glared at me with utter disgust. ‘Don’t touch me,’ he shouted, and the entire bus went completely silent.
My first instinct was to ignore him, and keep walking, since he was clearly a bit unhinged (and looked more than a little bit like Raoul Moat – seriously!) but he just kept shouting. ‘You don’t know me,’ he raved. ‘How dare you touch me?’
After the day I’d had, I wasn’t in the mood to cop an earful of abuse on top of it. ‘Well, get out of the way then,’ I snapped, half expecting him to punch me as I walked past.
He was still ranting away as I finally manoeuvred the pushchair into place. ‘Who do you think you are?’ he bellowed.
‘A pregnant lady with a baby,’ I yelled back. I don’t think he’d actually realised I was pregnant until that moment, because he suddenly went quiet (although I doubt that someone who’d hurl abuse at a mother struggling with a young child would care if she was preggers or not).
I don’t know when he got off the bus, as I was staring out the window, biting the side of my cheek almost clean through, trying not to cry. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing that he’d upset me.
I should point out that not a single person on that bus said a word in my defence – although a lovely Australian girl came up to me later. ‘Don’t let that guy bother you,’ she said. ‘What an asshole!’
So I finally made it home, drained and shocked that someone would speak to me like that. The perfect end to the ‘Day from Hell’. I was just glad to see the back of it.
Have you ever experienced such rudeness???

what an a…h..e typica; that no-one helped…
I know, right? I totally expect it in London though – it’s everyone out for themselves!!
Poor you, I don’t know how you didn’t cry…especially after the stress you’d just been through. :0( XXX
Good God, you poor wee soul! I have to agree with the above commenter, it sounds like stereotypical London nutbar behaviour to me. You should move to Glasgow, we’re all lovely 😉
I’m glad Lucia’s button episode is over and done with. I hope you’ve kept it for posterity!
Oh no poor you what an awful day you had to endure! People can be so rude there us just no need. The Aussie was right what an arse hole! Hope you are ok now xx
What a weirdo!
Gosh what a horrible day!! I’m sure I would’ve sat and cried! Don’t know what’s wrong with people these days! Fingers crossed you have a fabulous weekend to make up for it!
and the moral of that story is move to australia… sydney’s nice I hear…
Awwww, thanks for all your lovely comments. I shouldn’t be surprised, after 10 years living in London, about how rude some people can be!
I think that’s more than just rudeness – the man is just plain deranged. What a loony! I’m glad you stood up for yourself but I know what you mean you just never know when you might choose the wrong person to argue back with. Glad your daughter is ok x
Travelling on London transport is stressful enough without idiots like that. Excellent comeback on your part though!
I got a tictac stuck up my nose when I was little. By the time the doctor removed it, it was half dissolved – eww!
Oh god you so didnt need that that day did you?! Bloody hell what an idiot! I’d have smacked him one personally but I’m a nightmare if people are rude to me!
Glad its over with and heres to a few relaxed days for you! xx
Yes! There are some freaky people in this world. Just be glad we have our mental faculties and it wasn’t you who couldn’t deal with being touched.
That’s so nasty! I’ve never understood rudeness like that, maybe it was drummed into me from an early age that you treat others as you’d expect to be treated etc etc ! Hope your little girl wasn’t too freaked out and the weekend ended up better than it started …
What a horrible thing to happen, especially at the end of the day you’d already had! I don’t live in London but I visit a lot and have seen that type of thing happen so many times! Plus the ‘everyone else ignoring it’ too. You really don’t need that kind of thing!
It’s nice to be reassured that I wasn’t over reacting, and the man was just plain RUDE. If you’ve clearly got some kind of issue with people and crowds, why the heck would you take public transport, where most of the time you’re crammed up against someone’s sweaty armpit???
