OUR GORGEOUS GIRLY NIGHT IN! (collective bias)

I thank my lucky stars that I work from home. Sure, it has its downsides – not many office jobs simultaneously require you to hang out washing and put the groceries away – and you never quite switch off from work.

The upside is I can do the school run every day, and attend the girls’ school plays and teacher meetings, and I’m always close by if they fall ill, or just need Mum.

But, even though I’m always there in person, the fact I’m working means it’s not always quality time. It’s easy to get lost in emails and deadlines, and forget to simply enjoy their company.

So it was lovely to have a proper excuse to close the laptop this weekend, and devote an entire evening to just hanging out, and enjoying a girls’ night in.

First it was off to SAINSBURY’S to pick up some supplies: cooking chocolate, some fresh fruit, and some microwave popcorn.

The evening began with…

Chocolate fondue and mango: slippery, messy, but SO YUMMY!!!

Then it was time for a little singalong on the kids’ karaoke machine. Big Sis went from Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger, while Lil Sis opted for I Don’t Care, by Icona Pop. As you do.

Waiting impatiently for the popcorn to, well… pop!

Mine! All mine!

Sitting down (three outfit changes later!) to watch Monsters’ University.

Afterwards we had a lovely cuddle, and Big Sis proclaimed me to be the ‘Best Grown-Up EVER!’. Which, as I understand it, is the highest praise that a five-year-old can bestow.

It was a night of such simple pleasures, but the type I don’t enjoy often enough. Of course the girls loved the chocolate and the singing and the movie, but what they really really loved was just having Mummy relax and spend time with them, rather than telling them: ‘Hurry up and finish your food!’ or ‘Put that down!’ or ‘Just let me finish this email…’.

We’re already planning our next girls’ night in. Next time it’s ice cream sundaes and Cinderella. And I can’t wait!!

I totally feel your pain on this one – I work from home too and although it means I’m pretty much always there for Belle, a lot of the time I’m definitely not ‘there’ in the quality time sense. It’s just so hard to switch off when your office is in a corner of your living room.
