Looking back my first pregnancy was a breeze. Apart from a few weeks of morning sickness in the early stages, and some aches and pains at the end, I felt full of energy. I was one of those smug Mums-to-be women who went on about how much they loved being pregnant, and how great they felt. I went to the gym three times a week, and still fit some of my (stretchy) regular clothes right up until I gave birth.
My hair got thick and glossy, and people told me my skin looked radiant. As the due date neared, I looked forward to finally holding my baby, but also felt a bit sad that I wouldn’t be pregnant anymore.
So I wasn’t concerned about going through it all again. I even looked forward to it.
Except this time round, it’s completely different.
The first bit was just the same – the positive test that took us slightly by surprise, the excited disbelief. Then the sickness kicked in and this time it was brutal. The constant nausea, the unbelievable exhaustion, that nasty little Catch-22 that left my body weak with hunger, yet unable to eat anything without throwing up. For two months I could barely talk, or speak, but finally the sickness began to lift. Except now, instead of that amazing, energetic middle bit, I’m constantly knackered. I know it’s to be expected. I’m two and a half years older. Work, life, and an active toddler are all wearing me out, and I can’t sleep in, or nap when I feel tired, like I did last time. I’m much bigger than I was with Lucia, and I feel totally and utterly wrung out. This time around, no one is complimenting me on my pregnant glow. And although my hair has gone lovely and thick again, I feel too wretched to take any pleasure in my luscious new locks.
It’s even made me think twice about my long-held dream for three children. I’m just not sure I want to go through this all over again — and I haven’t even reached that really REALLY uncomfortable third trimester!
I’m really looking forward to the new baby, but I have to admit I’m not enjoying this pregnancy much at all. Did anyone else feel the same with their second (or subsequent) pregnancies???

Both my pregnancies were so different. Remember, you’ll forget the yucky bit when it’s all over. Maybe this baby is saving all the energy bit for the end? Hope you’re feeling better soon.
I have only been through one pregnancy which was horrible so have every sympathy for you x
Both my pregnancies were quite similar. Perhaps I was more nauseous with Miss C (my 2nd) and more tired but I put that down to running around after a toddler. I used to get Wee Z to lie on the couch with me when I was feeling tired and we’d nap together or we’d read a book…although there were times when I just put TV on and let him watch whilst I grabbed a quick nap.
Skirts and Wellies: Now that’s positive thinking! I’m going to cross my fingers, and hope that you’re right… x
KT: I feel worse for you – it must be hard to consider more children when your first experience is so tough. At least I was oblivious going into it!! x
Laura: I must admit, I’ve occasionally relied on the Timmy Time babysitter to catch a few extra Z’s. x
My first pregnancy was very much like your second. I was so sick I hardly ate for 3 months and ended up in hospital on a drip. Feeling sick for months on end is a horrible experience, so I really feel for you. Although my 3rd trimester wasn’t exactly fun (I had all the usual discomforts), it was the best of the three so hang on in there.
Take care, Helen @ BusinessPlusBaby
So sorry you’re feeling yuk. The lasting memory of my second pregnancy was the tiredness, it is so hard because you have to keep going for your other child, and I remember the ligaments all around my groin being softened, so walking used to become quite uncomfortable. I felt like an old lady! You will be fab I’m sure after baby is born, and hopefully feel good again x
OMIGOD…I am so with you! Every step of the way…my first pregnancy, yes I had dreadful sickness but once that passed i felt fabulous. I walked to walk every day, swam three times a week, still fitted into my shorts (although my bump was big). This time, I cannot even get to the top of the stairs without feeling terrible breathless. My hair is like straw and I look tired. I AM tired. And yes I am HUGE. Come on mummys little monkey, we can do this!!!
My experience was identical to yours. great 1st pregnancy, felt so magical, and loved being pregnant. second sucked. and i mean really sucked. just so bloody tired and uncomfortable.
good luck with the new arrival.

Hi! I only have one and had the perfect pregnancy until I was 6 months. Then, high blood pressure set in and it was a nightmare! At least you were radiant. I was bloated, had the “mask of pregnancy” discoloration under my eyes and upper lip (HORRIFIC!) and my hair just went limp. No yummy mummy to be here. And the thought of doing it all over again just pains me. I also thought I wanted 3 – even four. Now I’m thinking we may have to close shop after baby number 2 (which I am not even expecting yet!). By the way, love the name Lucia, thats the name we have if the next one is a girl 🙂
Maria x
Helen: You poor thing!!! I’m glad that my first pregnancy was easy, as it would have been really hard to consider a second baby otherwise. x
Suzanne: I’m having the same prob with ligaments as well now – except it’s in my right hip joint. Thankfully I have the most AMAZING osteopath, so hope he will keep the pain at bay for the rest of the pregnancy. x
Mummy Bear: I’m definitely following in your footsteps!! I feel a bit better after our holiday, but can already feel the tiredness creeping back in. And the indigestion has kicked in now too. Groan. Clearly I need a permanent holiday… x
Marketing to Milk: They lull you into a false sense of security, don’t they??? I have such an appreciation now for women who have more than two kids. How do they do it??? x
Maria: What we go through, huh? Then labour, and then we get no appreciation for the first 20 or so years – or until they have their own kids. 🙂 x
