URBAN DESERTS – CREATING A CACTUS TERRARIUM

wind light terrarium

A few years ago I bought one of those decorative wind light lanterns

I filled it with candles and popped it up on the window sill, and it was so pretty. But every time we had a really hot day the wax would melt and the candles would end up looking like deformed snowmen. Not so pretty.

In the end I got fed up and prised off the candle remains and the lantern sat, empty and forlorn, for the next year.

Then I had a brainwave – I dragged the girls to the local garden centre and bought some teeny weeny cacti and succulent plants. How cute are these?

Back home, I fitted a pot into each candle hole and – voila – I had a new cactus terrarium. Not only does it look contemporary, but the cacti are extremely low maintenance; the steam from the shower pretty much keeps them going, with just a tiny bit of added water once a week.

What do you think of my mini urban desert?

  1. This is a great idea! I’m just starting to get my own little collection of cactus and I’d love to do something like this with them!

    • I’m a bit obsessed with cacti at the moment – reminds me of the good old 80’s when they were really in fashion (giving away my age…). 😉 xx

This such a unique idea and your end result is so so cute! xxx

    • Aw, thanks Emily! AND cacti are almost impossible to kill – which is very important where I’m concerned. 😉 xx

    • You can pick the wind lanterns up quite cheaply now – all the bigger supermarkets seem to have them in their garden sections. xx

I love cactus plants! I’ve been seeing these everywhere!

    • They’re really cute, aren’t they Jenna? Tell you what else I’ve been seeing everywhere, that used to be huge when I was a kid – Venus Fly Traps! Even plants come back into fashion if you wait long enough… 😉 xx
