Motherhood is full of quandaries.
What do you do with your newborn while you’re taking a shower? How do you shoehorn yourself, a pushchair, and a toddler, into a single toilet cubicle? And how do you hold an umbrella, when your stroller needs two hands to steer?!
Mummy dilemmas.
Like this; Lil Sis is 2.5, and essentially toilet trained, but still has the odd accident at night. Which is fine; to be expected even.
I put a waterproof sheet on her bed: problem solved.
Not quite.
As a baby I kept her in a co-sleeper cot beside my bed, eventually moving her into a cot in her own room, then a toddler bed. Except one night she cottoned on to the fact she could get herself out of bed and come into my room, so that’s what she started doing every night.
I got so used to it, I barely registered her clambering in. Often, I’d wake up in the morning to find she was lying in my arms. I’d pretend to tell her off, but I loved it really.
But then, one night I was woken not with a flurry of kisses, but a spreading wet patch. You guessed it. Lil Sis had climbed in and wet MY bed, while her waterproofed bed was empty and dry!
Not happy.
A lot of spongeing, deodorising, and hairdryer-ing later, I had my bed back. But I panicked every time Lil Sis climbed in, in case she had another accident.
Then I found the answer: waterproof bedding for co-sleeping with toddlers.

So now I can relax knowing that – should another accident happen – the protective sheet can simply be stripped off, with the pricey mattress underneath unscathed.

It’s a lovely experience — when they sneakily climb into your bed and you wake with this soft warm little bundle. I have had similar moments of panic though — not because of nighttime accidents but when my daughter was battling nits.
You also reminded me of the difficulty of the stroller-umbrella combination. It’s not a good day for that today!
