It’s so weird to think that home computers weren’t even around when I was the Monkeys’ age. Can you imagine if we saw an iPad, or a 3D telly, or a handheld games console when we were kids?! Back then, Frogger blew my mind; Angry Birds would probably have disintegrated it into dust.
As much as I love technology, it’s also nice to take a break, and have some good, old-fashioned creative fun.
I LOVE it when the girls get into something that I did too, when I was their age. When Big Sis declared Cinderella (the original Disney version) was her favourite movie, I nearly died with excitement, because it’s one of my all-time favourites too!
When I watch them playing with their My Little Pony figures, I feel awash with warm, fuzzy nostalgia. Awash, I tell you.
So you can just imagine my utter glee to find some Fimo in our local Hobbycraft store. If you don’t know what Fimo is, it’s like plasticine, except, when you bake your creations in the oven, they convert into a hard plasticky material.
Oh, the hours upon hours I spent, moulding tiny characters, and sculpting Fimo jewellery, and making Mum presents she (pretended that she) absolutely adored.
Now, it was time to pass on the Fimo mantle to my children.
I wasn’t sure how long their attention would be held, so was pleasantly surprised when both girls sat at their craft table for over an hour, rolling and squishing the modelling clay into little beads, to make a necklace.
I helped to make the holes (and might have had a little go at crafting some shapes myself…) and then it was baking time. As soon as they’d cooled, Big Sis threaded the beads onto some string, and her necklace was ready to go.
OK, so it’s not exactly Tiffany & Co, but we had a great time AND there wasn’t a computer screen in sight!
