Ever say something to your kids, only to be instantly transported back 30 years, to when they were being said to you, rather than by you???
My mother said these exact words to me, now I’m carrying on the tradition by saying them to MY daughters. You could say it’s our lingual legacy.
• because I said so
• are your ears painted on?
• put it down, or you’ll go straight to bed
• do I look like I’m kidding?
• will you please leave your sister alone!
• not so rough!
• it’s bed-time, not running-around time
• you’ve got a whole box of toys – why do you need the one your sister is playing with?
• I’m not telling you again
• if I get to three… one… two… two-and-a-half…
• I don’t care who started it, I’m finishing it
I wonder if they’ll eventually bug my kids as much as they used to bug me???

Oh I can relate! A few weeks back I caught myself using one of my mum’s favourite (and incredibly annoying) sayings: “Do you think I came down the Clyde in a banana boat?” CRINGE.
Love it, love it, love it! I’m exactly the same with my kids, repeating everything my parents used to say. It’s hilarious when you think about. Now we know precisely what they were going through. Priceless.

Oh yeah, I wrote about a similar moment of mid-life ‘htf did that happen’ ness recently!!
I swore I would never lick a tissue and then touch my daughter’s face but I am already doing it! x
tonight I told my 11yr old that he needs to get the phone because I’m not his secretary! agghhh!
Love it this has made me smile, think I have said everyone this week!
Ha! I love it! In New Zealand we used to say ‘Do I look like a FOB?’ (fresh off the boat) x
Karma’s a bitch, hey?? 😉
It’s all the things you SWORE you’d never say and do, isn’t it?? x
Ah, the old spitty tissue trick. I can still remember, so vividly, my Mum’s hanky, smelling of spit and Charlie perfume, being swiped over my face!!! x
its just you hear it that often you cant help but repeat it, but yes it does make you cringe, but take some consolation that in 30yrs time you kids will be saying it to their kids, so make sure you only repeat what your grandchildren may want to hear
You know it’s only time before you utter the immortal line: ‘You treat this place like a hotel…’ x
I think I said every one of these TODAY!!! 😉
I’m sure it won’t be long…I’m afraid to say I have already accused them of treating the place like a cafe…and me like their maid! agghhhh what have I turned into! x
LOL! Good point, I hadn’t thought of the long-reaching effect my words could have… 😉
One phrase I swore I’d never use was “because I said so”. I feel like I should always be able to give a good reason for what I am telling my child to do or not to do. I must admit this is harder than I imagined – I’m doing quite well though. I do how ever spend a lot of my day saying “be careful!” like children hear that and think “yes, I’d better take that a bit more gently, thanks mum”.
I SWORE I’d never say ‘because I said so’ but the sad truth is I find myself running out of reasonable, thoughtful answers for Big Sis, who is in that ‘Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?’ stage. I definitely need to work on my patience levels, LOL!!!!!! x
lol this is so true. I’ve aid so many of those things. x
Very true, I also blogged about stuff I thought I’d never do. We all lie to ourselves! The worst is when I hear my kids rabbiting back stuff I say – like Ezra telling Jed ‘put that ball away… NOW’ in that tone that really makes me think, oh dear? Is that really how I sound? x
