If your newborn has ever suffered from colic, you’ll know just how distressing it can be for baby and Mum.

No one is quite sure what causes infant colic, but it usually begins when babies are around 2 – 3 weeks old, and can last up to 3 – 4 months. The most likely cause is small wind bubbles trapped in the baby’s bowel. Normally babies bring these up when you ‘burp’ them after a feed, but these smaller bubbles seem to be harder to expel, and can cause pain and discomfort to your little one.

DOES YOUR BABY HAVE COLIC?
• Does baby cry for 3 hours a day or more?
• Are the cries intensely shrill and piercing?
• Does the crying usually get worse in the late afternoon and evening?
• Does baby draws his legs up to his chest, and clench his fists?
• Is his belly tight and swollen?
• Are there no other obvious causes of the crying e.g. diarrhoea, vomiting or raised temperature?

HOW CAN I RELIEVE COLIC?
• Let him suck on your finger or a sterilised dummy, to help comfort and distract them
• Bounce him gently in your arms, or put him in a gentle bouncing seat
• Take him out for a walk in a pram or sling
• Take time to wind your baby thoroughly, by gently patting or rubbing his back
• Take your baby for a drive – the continuous motion may be soothing
• Turn on the tumble dryer or vacuum cleaner.  The white  noise made by such appliances can sometimes calm babies under 4 months of age
• Try baby massage, you may both find it relaxing
• Try giving them INFACOL
