My holidays always begin with a bout of panic: did I pack everything we need? Where’s my wallet? Did I leave the oven on? What if the pipes burst while we’re away?! Oh God, I think I left the bedroom window open!
But as we made our way towards Bosinver Farm – a selection of family friendly cottages in Cornwall – the busy grey motorways gave way to grassy green fields, and my niggling worries melted away too.
By the time we reached BOSINVER Farm Cottages, just a few minutes drive from St Austell, I didn’t care if I’d left the front door wide open, with a neon sign announcing: Free Stuff! Help yourself!!
There’s always that slight concern that your Cornwall accommodation won’t live up to the pictures on the website, but our three-bedroom self-catering cottage, Trerose, was even more stunning than we’d pictured.
Inside was a welcoming open plan living room design, with gorgeous exposed wooden beams (rustic remnants of the original dairy building). The lounge featured a panoramic bay window, allowing views over the front lawn and across to the Cornish hillsides.
The interior design was simple but beautiful; lots of natural timber and white-washed furniture gave it a traditional Cornish beachside feel, while cleverly placed accents of aqua and chartreuse added a fresh contemporary edge.
The girls were thrilled by their new surroundings, running into each room – their squeals of excitement getting louder and louder.
‘WOW!’ Lil Sis exclaimed as she discovered the family bathroom, with its funky rainbow-tiled walls. ‘I LOVE our holiday home!’ Big Sis announced, as she claimed her bed in the gorgeous twin room. ‘I want to stay here forever!’
At home OH and I lead such busy lives that never really have time to just be. I think that’s what I loved the most about the cottage – it just felt so utterly calm, so relaxing.
We ate breakfast together each morning at the table – something we never get to do normally, as OH leaves before we wake up, and gets home after the girls are in bed.
In the evenings we played games, or read the paper, or planned what we were doing the next day. I think the television went on once in four days. Such simple pleasures, but all things our regular day-to-day lives just didn’t allow.
The owners Dave and Pat have thought of absolutely everything you could possibly need, want or expect from family friendly cottages in Cornwall – from the practical (spare wellies, a freezer full of frozen home-made meals, and a list of babysitters to sit for you on site) to the fun (a zip wire, a solar-heated swimming pool, and this amazing indoor play area, below).
There’s also a games room, pony rides, daily animal feeding sessions, Wild Kids’ Club, tennis courts, adventure trails, and the list goes on…
We arrived thinking four nights was such a long time, but it flew by way too quickly. There’s so much to see and do in the surrounding areas – from stunning Cornish beaches and woodland walks, to steam train rides and theme parks (more about what we got up to in a later post!).
But the best part about staying at Bosinver was just being able to relax and spend time together. Mornings were filled with cuddles, not alarm clocks. Breakfast was spent leisurely eating at the table, not rushing out the door screeching: ‘Hurry up, or we’ll be late for school!’
One week after leaving Cornwall we’re still pining for our lovely farm cottage *sniff sniff*.
The great thing about not even scratching the surface of everything to see and do at Bosinver is – we have the PERFECT excuse to go back.
