It’s that time of the year… when you drag out the Christmas ornaments, and start dropping present hints to your OH, and suddenly look around your home and wail: ‘Oh God, we’ve got guests arriving in three weeks, and the place is a state!’ (please say it’s not just me?!).
We recently gave our lounge a CarpetRight makeover, which you can read more about HERE. My first instinct was to go for a neutral colour (dark enough to help mask the mess made by two young children) but then I had a change of heart. After a chat with OH, we decided to step right outside our comfort zone, and go for a bold stripe instead.
I’ll be honest – I second-guessed myself when the rolls were delivered. I’d always played it so safe with furnishings so this was a huge leap for me. I kept pulling back a corner, trying to imagine how it was going to look and panicking that it was just too much. But it was a risk that paid off, because the striped design totally made the room.
It was such a simple change, but made such a huge difference – an instant style lift.
It showed me that you need to take some decorating risks to achieve spectactular results. Rather than viewing your flooring as something practical, why not look at it as a style accessory instead? Make your carpet the focal point of the room. Forget boring beige seagrass mats – look at bold stripes, and geometric shapes.
Block colours don’t have to be bland; try bright purple, rich plum, and brilliant turquoise. Or… all three together! If you think they couldn’t possibly work together, check out the photo above. Doesn’t it look fab?
There’s plenty more design inspiration in Carpetright’s new LOOK BOOK, and it may not cost as much as you think to give your home a complete facelift.
